How to Care For all your First Ascent Rainwear

Over time, waterproof jackets will lose their resilience, allowing water to penetrate through the jacket's surface. However - the good news is that with the right cleaning and re-waterproofing, your rainwear jacket will be perfectly ready for your next adventure!

TIPS FOR CLEANING YOUR First ascent RAIN JACKET:

Before washing your jacket:

Remove any excess dirt: Clean the exterior dirt, mud or dust off the surface of the jacket. Dirt attracts water, and can cover the water-repellent coating - which may cause your rain jacket to absorb water rather than repel it.

Close all zippers and check pockets for any items or dirt: Before placing your rain jacket into the wash, make sure you have closed all zippers as well as Velcro straps. Also ensure all  elastic tensions on your jacket are loosened. Check all pockets for any odd bits and pieces you may have picked up on your last adventure.

Using a MACHINE WASH:

Check wash care label: Always first look at the wash care label to find the manufacturer’s instructions on best practice or machine-settings for washing your specific rain jacket.

Use Nikwax Tech Wash: Using normal household detergents or soaps while washing your jacket may cause it to deteriorate over time due to unwanted chemicals or substances. The Nikwax Tech Wash, a technical cleaner designed specifically for wet-weather apparel and equipment, helps to refresh and revive your rain jacket and ensure that it maintains its breathability and re-stores the water-repellency coating on your gear.

Using a TUMBLE DRYer:

Place your rain jacket in the tumble dryer on a low heat while checking it in 15 minute intervals. This may take up to 40 minutes depending on your specific jacket.

HOW TO USE NIKWAX TECH WASH:

  • Remove all detergent build-up from the dispenser in your washing machine.
  • Place your jacket, garments or gear in a washing machine. (It is important to note that you should only use a maximum of 2 items at a time).
  • Use between 100 – 150ml of Nikwax Tech Wash for 1-2 items. Add this to the detergent dispenser in your washing machine.
  • Wash your jacket, or other apparel, according to manufacturer's wash care label.
